Pioneer DIN MP3/Aux Input hack

Post by inblack »

Ok so this mod is not in a Truck or for wheeling but

I just put MP3 adapters in both vehicles.

In the Altima I have a 2DIN Pioneer head unit and I created my own adapter for $3.00 using the instructions on this website ...
http://stereophonik.com/gutterslide/IP-BUS_Hack/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I purchased a pair of 3.5mm headphone jacks from Sayal Electronics for $2.00
http://www.sayal.com/index.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And I acquired 2 CD Audio Plugs from the local Embur Computers here in Oakville. $Free -- Thank you to them.
The additional $1.00 i figure is for the Wire and solder that I used out of my own stockpiles.

This thing works Great. Took me about 1.5 hours to make it, and that included Radio removal, cutting, soldering, mounting the plug and reassembly.
I have had to Crank the SLA adjustment in the Pioneer to +4 so that the volume balances when switching from MP3 to Radio/CD but that is no big deal.

For the Miata we have the Factory Mazda deck installed and intend to keep that. So I sourced a GROM adapter from
http://www.gromaudio.com/aux.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
With the appropriate harness for our 08 MX-5, this was $75.00 delivered from California. Took about 7 days to get it here USPS to my office.
This unit plugs directly into the back of the Factory radio and works by selecting the CD Changer on the head unit. We do not have the Bose option in our car, so we do not have a CD changer.
It is small enough that I was easily able to tuck it away into the SMALL space behind the dash under the radio.
Again this unit works as advertised and sounds great.
Installation time 35min.

Neither of these do-hickeys allow you to have any control of your MP3/Ipod player through your head unit. But that is a small consolation for the better sound quality (over those pesky radio tuner units) to get the ???MB of music that you have stored played through the sound system in the car.
Is preparing to spend 6 months living out of a storage locker.
