Melt Mod to fit 285s

Post by dark_knight »

My 2.5" lift will be here any day, after I install it I'll be getting new tires. I'm still deciding on what tire to purchase but I do know they'll be 285/75/16s. For all you 2nd gen owners out there with a mild lift and 285s...do you experience a lot of rubbing and have you had to do the melt mod where you heat up that bulge in the plastic fender wall and push it inwards?

I'll find out as soon as I fit new tires but it can't hurt to ask ahead of time.

Thanks

That's exactly where I heard of this mod. It's a bit puzzling though, some say they needed to do it and some say they have no issues. I think I'll just wait till I get the tires and go from there.

Looking at my truck today as it sits with 31s, it's fairly evident that I'll need to massage some of the plastic.

PS. what size and type of tires are you running?

I've got a set of bf's 285/75/16 on my 05 Fronty and had to do no trimming. At full lock it rubs a little on the inner fender, but nothing major. Your right about what everyone says some have alot of rub and some have very minimal?????? I dont know why this is. If you get the lift on and dont buy tires and your at a coffee meet we can unload my spare and slap it on yours to see...just an idea.

Right on, the lift will be on any day if the damn thing gets here!!!

Would love to mount a 285, just to see before I buy. Thanks for the offer.
