Gov Surplus - 1988 Dew Eng LTD M104 CDN 4
https://www.gcsurplus.ca/mn-eng.cfm?snc ... =ferm-clos
I've wanted a "off-road" military trailer for some time but the M104 is a little big and I'm tight on funds to make a mistake.
Can anyone confirm the hitch height on the M104 is the same as the M105, which is 36"?
Also does anyone know if the air over hydraulic brakes are normally applied or normally released? Basically without an air connection will the brakes be locked on or locked off?
The lunette it bolted on, not the rotating style. On the/this M104 can the lunette be unbolted from the top of the frame and rebolted to the underside?
Lastly does anyone have, or have access to the TM for this vintage of CDN M104? Everything I can find is for M105s of a much (decades) older vintage.

That's the trailer for an MLVW. It attaches quite high. The best trailers for the X are the old Iltis or LSVW trailers.
There are manual hand brakes which lock the trailer. The air assist is for braking only. Whithout them, the trailer free wheels; trust me, I almost lost one down an embankment
These are way too big for the Xterra

Miner's attaching it most likely to his Titan. Far larger than our X's.

The loop from this trailer is around my waist level.
I'm going to the army tonight and will take a measurement from one of the trailers in the back compound.

Yeah they are meant for the 2 1/2 Ton cargo trucks, so the Duece or Duece-and-a-half, with single rear wheels (not duals). Still too big for a half-ton Titan but maybe not grossly too big.
Medic, if you can get the measurement from the ground to the lunette of a level trailer I'd appreciate it. If you can look at a M104 with this style of lunette and see if it can be moved to under the tongue to decrease the hight it would be fantastic.

MLVW trailers sit at 40.5" to the center of the loop, but the're sitting a bit of a tilt back (the other is 41" so it's tilted more), but not much, but i'll give you an idea.
The center of the pindle hook on the LSVW is 29", and I don't feel like going out in the snow to measure the actual trailer's loop, but that's close enough
Yes, not only am I surfing the forum during work hours, I actually went out to measure them for ya too because I've got so much to do

Thank you! Finally my tax dollars are doing something useful for me.
Any idea if the M104 lunette can be flipped?

As we say in the military, it's easier to ask for forgiveness, than it is to ask for permission...
Just looked now, the trailers we have in the garage that I measured, they're tagged as M102 CDN3. Should still give ya the same dimensions however...
M102 Chassis, Trailer, 1½-ton, 2-wheeled (G754)
M102A1 Chassis, Trailer, 1½-ton, 2-wheeled
M102A2 Chassis, Trailer, 1½-ton, 2-wheeled
M104 Trailer, cargo, 1¼-ton, 2-wheeled (M102 chassis) (G754)
M104A1 Trailer, cargo, 1¼-ton, 2-wheeled
M104A2 Trailer, cargo, 1¼-ton, 2-wheeled

Re: Gov Surplus - 1988 Dew Eng LTD M104 CDN 4
Measured the truck and my pintle up, centre of the lunette will be at 26.5" when hitched. The centre of the lunette when level is 40.5", per above, and ~36.5" when flipped under the drawbar, per above. I have no issue towing a trailer pitched down by 10" but too me that much deviation isn't worth the investment. The dry weight of the trailer is also less then desirable at ~2,400lbs.
So I will keep my eyes open for a M101A2 or M101A3 (3/4 tons, not the CDN M101 1/4 ton) or one of the LSVW trailers? I personally don't feel the M101A2 and M101A3 are built heavy enough or big enough for my wants but they should fulfil most of my planned uses. What are the bed dimensions and weights for the LSVW trailers?

Saw it today. The dimensions and design (front loading gate) seem to match a M104, however it doesn't seem high enough. The lunette height is ~29".

It wasn't as high as it should be because it was sitting in a hole. Brought it home yesterday, and tried to flip the lunette today....I'll try again next weekend with a bigger BFH.

For now it will stay on the farm and be used with the tractor. I'll go over the axles and brakes, and change the lights over to 12v LED as time permits. Hopefully plate it next summer.
Longer term I'm not sure.

Plan now, probably sell it or sit on it forever like everyone else that has one. Just no time...and its freaking big.
Found this one on kijiji today, I think the ILTIS is a little smaller than a Jeep or X.
